Clare’s story

Clare Jelfs – Volunteer Counsellor

I have recently started volunteering for GCA and chose the organisation as I am very interested in working in the addiction field, and was also impressed with the services the organisation offers its clients. For example, the feel good Friday group gives service users the opportunity to meet other people and be involved in activities that can help with re-constructing their lives after alcohol addiction.

My role as volunteer counsellor will also increase my chances of employability when I finish my degree.  I am thoroughly supported by managers and fellow counsellors alike, and this has contributed to my feeling comfortable on shift and being part of the GCA team. GCA are very accommodating and have allowed me to choose the shift that suited my University commitments.

I have been volunteering for some years, and although some people have commented that I must be crazy “working for nothing” I am repaid with the satisfaction I feel when helping others and believe that the experience I have, and shall continue gaining in my role at GCA is invaluable and could not be replaced by monetary value.
