David Budge – Chair of GCA
I had previously worked as a consultant to the NHS promoting a number of healthy living programmes and had developed a real interest in the area of preventative health. Coupled with this, my original invitation to join the board at GCA came at a time when the third sector was being required by its funders to operate in a more business like way. The opportunity therefore to contribute what I knew about running a business, combined with the chance to learn more and get involved in an area crucial to the health of the nation made it an irresistible invitation. Twenty years on, I’m still here and while much of the landscape has changed, the challenge to GCA to create, attract funding for and deliver its services in a caring but highly cost effective manner remains as intense as ever. Another key lesson for me, through my involvement with GCA, has been the power of volunteering and the immense benefits it delivers, not only for our clients and wider society but for the volunteers themselves. It’ a classic win-win-win situation and I’d love to see a lot more of it across the country.
Ross Sammeroff – Vice Chair
When I returned to Glasgow in 1999 after a lengthy period of employment outside the UK, I was hoping to find an opportunity where I could utilise any limited talents that I may have had to “give something back” to Glasgow or really the wider community. I had always worked in the Human Resources and Recruitment fields and initially, thought about taking a Counselling course and becoming a qualified Counsellor ( as an HR guy and like many Glaswegians, I had no difficulty in talking and hopefully was a reasonably good “listener”).
On further discussions with family, close friends and professionals in the field, however, I fairly quickly appreciated that there was a lot more to Counselling than the skills mentioned above and decided to keep looking! As fate would have it, my brother Stanley, who sadly passed away recently, told me to speak to his Counsellor Iain Brown, who also happened to be the Chairperson of the Glasgow Council on Alcohol! Iain and I had a great discussion and he advised me to join the GCA Executive Committee whereby I could try to utilise my Business and HR experience. Well, as they say – the rest is history.
I have had the great honour and have always really enjoyed being allowed to serve this great Voluntary organisation for so many years. Throughout my long tenure at GCA, I have always been so impressed with the professional, skilful, loyal and hard working staff members we have had and continue to employ. I would also like to convey my admiration for all the Volunteers who give their time and energy so selflessly.
Growing up in the 1970s in a deprived rural community in West Cumbria led to my desire and need to strive for Social Justice. After ignoring the careers advice, “take a job in the local hat factory”, I qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in inner city Birmingham. During this time I worked in diverse settings including early intervention, research, psychotherapy, and the community before leaving for Bonnie Scotland!
I took up the post as Charge Nurse for an acute ward specialising in alcohol and drug detoxification. Frustrated by the limitations of the level and quality of service provided to patients (that I believed everyone had a right to), I left and joined The Richmond Fellowship Scotland. My first position there was Operations Manager for individuals who were leaving hospital, but who’s needs continued to challenge existing services, before undertaking the post of National Training and Assessor Coordinator with the organisation.
In 2001, I joined Sacro as the Training and Development Manager and latterly Organisational Development Manager, where my knowledge, skills, and experience developed further in the field of Criminal Justice and Organisational Development. In 2010, I joined Glasgow City Council’s Education Services Department before moving to a position as a Development Officer, specialising in Youth Employment within the Economic and Social Development Division (Development and Regeneration Services Dept).
My experience of working in the third sector has cemented my belief of its abilities to work in an innovative and flexible way to best serve the needs of service users, communities and staff. This commitment and belief remains today and is the reason I joined CCA as a volunteer in 2015.
Sam Seabrook is an experienced Change Management professional who has held management positions in both utilities and financial services. He currently works for a global financial services organisation, focussed on the delivery of regulatory change. Sam lives in Glasgow with his wife and young family and is keen to use his experience to support the aims of GCA – allowing them to continue the tremendous work that they do!
Moving to Glasgow from Sydney, Australia, in 2015, Adam has held various senior operational and executive management positions across a number of health and human services portfolios in the Australian government as well as in the not-for-profit sector.
Adam brings extensive experience in developing and implementing public policy and programmes aimed at improving the lives of varying groups of people, as well as the sustainability of the systems that support them. Adam has a keen interest and brings well-rounded skills in business operations, innovation and governance.
Adam is currently working within Scotland’s digital skills industry in an Operations capacity and is excited by the opportunity to work with the skilled and experienced people at Glasgow Council on Alcohol to continue to deliver the programs and services the Glasgow community needs.
Dr Gillian Mayes
Gillian Mayes is a retired academic, now with honorary status in the School of Psychology at Glasgow University. She has been on the Board for four and a half (enjoyable!) years and has been involved particularly with service users over that period. She edited conversations with a number of service users, which led to the publication of ‘Singular Voices’ which is currently being launched.
Having moved back home to Glasgow ten months ago, after living 8 years in England and due to recent personal circumstances, I wanted to pursue a new challenge and upon researching various charities, being a board member for GCA seemed ideal and too good an opportunity to turn down.
Having worked in the hospitality industry for 14 years and currently managing a 3-star hotel in Edinburgh, I felt that my business acumen as well as my life experience and background would allow for me to impact on GCA positively.
As one of the newest board members, I feel that GCA will be an exciting opportunity for me and I very much look forward to what lies ahead.
Gary Meek – CEO
Gary has significant experience working within the health and social care industry, with a particular focus on recovery driven services. His previous roles have been with national and local charities, local authorities and private business, all of which have been addressing needs to achieve the best outcomes for individuals who use support services. Gary has a wealth of experience in services which deliver support such as;
- Training and Education
- Community development
- Tenancy Sustainment
- Group work
- Health care
Gary’s role is to lead the organisation in accordance with professional ethics, vision and values that are at the centre of GCAs beliefs and support the governance of the organisation in line with charity and company law.
Head of Services and Depute Chief Executive Officer – Linda is responsible for the overall management and development of GCA Services and links in withmany other services and organizations across the city. Linda has worked in the addiction field since 1992 starting out as a volunteer alcohol counsellor at GCA , Linda has since had a variety of roles within the addiction field in Glasgow , including several years in residential recovery services.
Senior practice supervisor- Janice is responsible for monitoring and continuously improving the quality of GCA services; whilst safeguarding high standards of care. Janice is G.C.A‘s Child Protection Coordinator and monitors all Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult issues.
Janice joined GCA in 2002; she heads up a team of 3 supervisors who provide supervision and support to all GCA Counsellors and Group workers. Janice manages and provides a relationship counselling service within GCA.
Peter Russell – Finance Manager
Peter gained most of his Accounting experience working in a major manufacturing company for almost 30 years. Starting as an Accountancy Assistant in 1974 and graduating to become a Finance Manager for the organisation’s Glasgow Factory which had a turnover of some £90m.
In 2003 he took early retirement and since then has worked for a variety of companies and organisations. These have included a catering company, a shipping company , a graphic design company, a healthy living charity and a firm of Chartered Accountants before landing up at the Glasgow Council on Alcohol in October 2015.
Margaret Livingstone – Counselling Team Leader
Following 20 years of working in social housing, Margaret trained as a person centred counsellor and joined GCA in 2009 and has been involved in a variety of roles – Prevention and Education Team Leader, COSCA Counselling Skills Certificate Trainer and Volunteer Counsellor.
Margaret left the organisation in 2015 gaining experience in family work and rejoined in 2016 as part time Team Leader in the Counselling Department. Margaret leads and coordinates the work of staff, volunteers and placement students to ensure that clients can easily access the service and experience as positive outcomes as possible.
Jim McSorley – Resilient Communities Team Leader
Jim is the team leader for the GCA Resilient Communities team. Jim has over 10 years experience in the field of alcohol and drugs P&E. Jim is the current chair of the NW Glasgow ADP P&E sub-group, who are a multiagency/disciplinary group working together to ensure a co-ordinated approach to tackling alcohol and drug issues within the community. Jim has led many innovations in the community including setting up a resource library for local community groups and development of the AFFIT branding – an initiative designed to promote better chances and choices for young people and adults, including participation in alcohol free activities. Jim has worked closely with local recovery communities providing training and capacity building for their volunteers. Jim has also supported service users into volunteering which eventually led to employment. He has previous experience as a street based youth worker and group work facilitator.
